Australian Team Athlete Applications Now Open for the 2027 Virtus Asia Oceania Games, Bangkok 

Australian Team applications are now open for athletes interested in representing Australia at the 2027 Virtus Asia Oceania Games in Bangkok, Thailand. 

The second edition of the Virtus Asia Oceania Games will be held from 24 February to 3 March 2027, after being rescheduled from its original November 2026 dates. 

Hosted by the Sports Association for Intellectual Disability of Thailand, the Games will bring together athletes with an intellectual impairment from across Asia and Oceania for a celebration of excellence, sportsmanship and unity. 

The event is an important part of the international pathways for athletes with an intellectual impairment, providing the opportunity to compete against the region’s best and represent Australia on the international stage. 

We’re proud to continue supporting the growth of the Virtus Asia Oceania region, having hosted the first regional event here in Brisbane, Australia back in 2022 (OA Games 2022) and now preparing to support the next Australian Team on the road to Bangkok. 

The Virtus Asia Oceania Games will be the first of two major international competition opportunities for Australian athletes with an intellectual impairment in 2027. 

The Virtus Global Games will also be held later in the year in Egypt, with Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis and Taekwondo expected to be included in the competition program. 

Athletes and families are encouraged to consider the timing and financial commitment of both events when deciding whether to apply. 

Sport Inclusion Australia will manage the Australian Team and is inviting eligible athletes to submit an application to be considered for selection. 

Sports 

Australian Team applications are now open for: 

• Athletics (II-1, II-2, II-3 and Youth II-1) 

• Swimming (II-1, II-2 and II-3) 

• Table Tennis (II-1, II-2 and II-3) 

• Taekwondo (II-1) 

• Badminton (II-1, II-2 and II-3) – Demonstration Sport 

Important dates 

Applications close: 15 August 2026 
Event dates: 24 February – 3 March 2027

Sport-specific Selection Criteria are available on Australian Team event page.

It is anticipated that Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis will include IPC Classification opportunities.
